World football has just received a big shock when Diogo Jota, a star of Liverpool and the Portuguese national team, passed away in a serious traffic accident in Spain. According to Marca, the incident happened at km 65 near Sanabria, Zamora province, northwestern Spain.
Witnesses at the scene said that the wedding car Jota and Andre suddenly lost control, went off the road and caught fire. The fire quickly spread, completely burning the car and part of the surrounding trees, causing a fatty fire. When rescuers arrived, both victims had no chance of survival.
The news of Jota’s passing has shaken the football world. Born in 1996 in Porto, Jota is one of the outstanding players of the new generation of Portuguese football. He joined Liverpool in 2020 from Wolverhampton Wanderers for a transfer fee of €44.7 million and quickly made his mark at Anfield.
Jota has made a total of 182 appearances for the Reds in all competitions, scoring 65 goals and providing 26 assists. He has played a key role in many of the team’s recent successes, notably the 2024/25 Premier League title – Liverpool’s first trophy under Jurgen Klopp, in addition to the 2021/22 national tackles (FA Cup and League Cup).
Not known as a player with rich technique and sensitive goal-scoring instinct, Jota is still highly appreciated for his dedication and professionalism in training. He always maintains an exemplary image in the eyes of teammates as well as religious fans, a mirror of his unpretentious but humble playing attitude off the field.
Jota’s sudden death is a shock not only to his family but also to the entire Liverpool Club and football fans in general. The Portuguese community, where Jota is considered a national pride, is also in mourning over this great loss.
Currently, Liverpool has not made an official announcement but is designed according to the idea of organizing activities dedicated to Jota. On social networks, a series of players, coaches and clubs from all over the world have sent their deepest condolences to his family.
